Edra Jeanette (Davis) Hutton, 97, Anderson, IN, passed away on January 4, 2024, peacefully at home following an extended illness. A native of Henry County and a former resident of Daleville, she graduated with honors from New Castle High School in 1944 with a scholarship to Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. She majored in Business Education and in June 1948 graduated with a Special Bachelor of Science in Education. On the same day she graduated, she married Robert Hutton at the High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie. She later earned a Master of Arts in Education from Ball State Teachers College in 1957. Beginning in 1948, she taught one year at Mt. Summit and two years at North Anderson Elementary School. Subsequently, she taught second grade for thirty-five years in the same classroom at 29th Street Elementary School in Anderson until her retirement in 1989. She often served as the building representative for the teachers' union, Anderson Local 519 of the American Federation of Teachers. Her retirement years were no less busy. She wintered from 1989 to 2019 in Bradenton, FL. While in Florida, she was surrounded by many friends, served on her condominium association board, and attended Bethel Baptist Church. She stayed active as a volunteer teacher’s assistant at Samoset Elementary and volunteered at the Manatee Village Historical Park in Bradenton. She loved to read, travel with friends, play bridge, and meet with her friends almost daily for lunch. Edra was preceded in death by parents Robert Harrison and Cora Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Davis of New Castle; husband Robert Roscoe Hutton Jr.; sister Mary Evelyn Davis of Rockville, MD; and brother Russell Eugene Davis of New Castle. She is survived by two sons, Steven Mark Hutton of Pittsboro, NC, and Christopher Lee Hutton of Anderson; sister-in-law Clara Hutton Blessing of Anderson; special niece Aprile Hutton Reed of Daleville; and several nieces and nephews. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to niece, Lisa Chang Hodges, West Lafayette, for reading a memorial from her sons to their mother.
