Listen to Obituary

It came to pass that on December 25, 1928, God showed favor to Kit and Bessie George to honor birth to their second born child Ella Bell George. Ella was born in Pike Road, Alabama as the first daughter of six children. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Kit George Sr. and Bessie George. Her five siblings Kit George, Jr., Fred George, Ernest Nash, Bessie George Dixon, Mozzelle George Tellis. She was also proceeded in death by her daughters Kandie Mimms and Suzy Mimms.

Ella later married Leon Nelson and, to this union, was blessed with her eldest daughter Margaret Nelson (Mallett). Ella later married Horace C. Mimms after moving to Anderson, Indiana. To this union they were blessed with 8 more children to include:
Linda “Byrd” Mimms (Indianapolis, IN); Dennis Mimms (wife “JoJo”) Bloomington, IN); Konnie Mimms (Cincinnati, OH); Kevin Mimms (Anderson, IN); Kandie Mimms (Anderson, IN); Lisa Mimms (Oklahoma City, OK); Suzy Mimms (Anderson, IN) and Joseph “Ty” Mimms (Anderson, IN).

Throughout Ella’s life she was very much the Matriarch of her family. She was honored and respected by all who knew her. She reigned as Our Queen to include at the annual George family reunions. She lived by her words, actions and mostly her Faith. Putting God first, she always let us know everything would be ok (regarding life) and instilled the sayings “just keep smiling and say hello” and “just wait on time”. She would sing calming and a collective of spirituals, many in which we would record and join in. Growing up it was “Jesus is on the main line; you can call him up and tell him what you want”. The recent one that rings in our ears was her singing “This Old Building” (Keeps on Leaning) will live in our memories forever. The eve of her final call a hospice nurse knowing the hearing goes last sung to Ella “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

History and Accolades:
Ella was the senior and eldest survivor at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. During the times she was unable to attend she consistently paid her tithes teaching us the value of spiritual giving as we observed the rewards of God’s promise.
She sang with her cousins in a musical group called? (with Idelle).
She worked in hospital settings at St. Ambrose Hospital (custodial care), St John’s Hospital (as a Nurse Aide) and was a volunteer Candy Striper. Her work also included being a caregiver for “Mrs. Townsend”.

She often worked at the election polls and volunteered working the phone banks during the campaign years for President Barack Obama.

Ella’s tenure was at General Motors in Anderson, IN achieving near 30 years hired in 1968 retired in April of 1997.

She was known to mother all including friends of her 9 children in which the friend/siblings often expressed their adoration calling her Momma or Mother Mimms.

Her grandchildren and great grands affectionately called her Momma, Big Momma and Grandma Mimms. Ella shared her songs, her wisdom and her quick wit that would make anyone in earshot laugh out loud!!! Her discipline invoked lining her children up and teaching “The Golden Rule” saying “how would you like it if someone did it to you”.

Everyone also recognized that she was our champion for her yeast rolls and the sweet potato pies, unmatched!

Through it all our hearts are heavy, but more so, we are so grateful and overjoyed for her Divine intervention in our lives. She left us with her peace, God’s Peace.
