Kathleen Anne Sumner-Smith, 73, of Anderson, passed away on August 7, 2024, at her home in
Anderson, IN. She was born on September 16, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana and resided most of her life
in Anderson.
Kathleen graduated from Warren Central High School in 1968, and then attended Ball State University,
graduating in 1972.
Kathy was a Teacher for 39 years at Frankton-Lapel Community Schools, having taught at Jackson
Elementary, Lapel Elementary, and Frankton Elementary. She loved teaching, and she also coached the
girl’s basketball team while at Jackson Elementary.
Besides her professional achievements, Kathy loved playing sudoku and watching old westerns and, of
course, the Hallmark channel. She also enjoyed vacationing at multiple historical sites throughout the
U.S. and loved going to the mountains.
She was a very proud parent to her son, Mike Sumner. She taught him to always live by the “golden
rule”. We will always remember how she sacrificed for others and deeply loved all of her family
members.
Kathleen is survived by her spouse, Jim Smith of Anderson whom she married in 2018; son, Mike Sumner
of Houston, TX; brother, Don (Barbara (deceased)) Kemp and Jim (Deanna) Kemp; and sister,
Patricia Ooley. She is also survived by her step family, Chantell (Terry) Detling and their children, Rylan
and Delaney, and Frank (Leslie) Smith and their children, Jared, Gavin, and Julia.
She was preceded in death by his father, Donald "Don" Kemp; and mother, Margaret Kemp.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 16th, 2024, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, in Anderson, IN.
Services will follow at 1:00 pm at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, with Brad Storm officiating.
Burial will take place in the Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, Anderson, IN.
Kathleen was a member of Kingston Avenue Baptist Church, and memorial contributions may be made
to the church in her memory.
