Mary Josephine Lee, 76, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Mary Jo was born in Anderson in 1947 to Juanita P. (Williams) and Denver O. Sheppard. She attended Anderson High School and Indiana Business College. She married Gary in 1965 and they had two children, Jennifer and Michael (Johna) Lee.

Mary Jo co-owned AM Bookkeeping and provided accounting services to several small not-for-profit agencies in the area. She was the CEO of Alternatives Inc. (Women’s Alternatives) for over 25 years and served on various boards, including Community Hospital Anderson and Essential Senior Health and Living.

Mary Jo's life's work centered around advocacy and safety for domestic violence survivors. She was recognized for this work throughout her career. She was most proud of receiving the Sagamore of the Wabash and Athena awards.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; daughter, Jennifer Mitchell; son, Michael (Johna) Lee; daughter, Melissa Stanton; grandchildren, Rachel Dennis, Katelyn (Melissa) Lee, Hannah (Michael) Farmer, and Justin (Jessica) Krieg and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Rozelle Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 9th from 3pm to 7pm.

She will be laid to rest at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alternatives Inc.
