Mary Ann Nave-Sembly, 77, passed away on Oct. 18, 2023, at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson.
She was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Gholson, Mississippi. She retired in 2008 after 37 years of service with General Motors where she worked in management.
She was a graduate of Anderson High School and Indiana School of Business and Technology.
She was a member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church (Anderson) for over 60 years where she served in many ministries. She had a passionate love for children and worked as a mentor, tutor, and youth advisor. She was involved in many community activities and volunteered at the Wilson Boys and Girls Club, Geater Community Center, Madison County Urban League, and Anderson Schools. She was a life member at the NAACP.
Mary is survived by her sons, Stephen (Terri) Sawyer of Anderson, Aaron Sembly, Cedric Young; daughter, Taylor Wright (Mark) of Indianapolis; brothers, James Nave Sr. and Tommy Nave of Anderson; sisters, Lorene Craig of Ellenwood, Georgia, and Hazel Nave of Anderson.
Mary leaves behind 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Sembly; parents, James Roger Nave, Berniece and Eugene Brown; son, Tommy Sawyer; daughter, Shawn Young; sister, Agnes Nave-Enoch; brother, Ed Nave; stepbrothers, Gregory and Steward Brown.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Bethesda Missionary Church at 2124 Cedar St., Anderson. Funeral service will be Saturday at noon at the church with Pastor Tenorris Davis and Rev. Floyd Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park.
