Norma Jean Newcomer, 89, of Anderson, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 2:26 PM on July 24, 2025, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family, including her husband, Jim; her children, Lori and Mark; her sister Phyllis; stepdaughter, Vickie; daughter-in-law, Diane; granddaughter, Aubrey; and friends Lynn and Patricia.
Born in Anderson, Indiana, Norma was a lifelong resident of the community she cherished. She was the daughter of Kathryn (Reichert) and Orville Stohler.
A proud graduate of Anderson High School (Class of 1953), Norma went on to earn both her B.S. (1957) and M.A. degrees from Ball State University. She dedicated 28 years to teaching in Anderson Community Schools, where she impacted countless lives at Westvale, Brentwood, and North Anderson Elementary Schools.
Norma was a devoted and lifelong member of Central Christian Church in Anderson. She sang in the church choir for over 70 years and served faithfully as a deacon, elder, and organizer of funeral dinners for many years. She also played in the bell choir.
On May 28, 1994, she married the love of her life, James (Jim) Benjamin Newcomer. Together, they shared a love for travel and adventure, having visited all 50 U.S. states and numerous countries. A highlight of her later years was a cherished 8-day Caribbean cruise in February 2025 with Jim, her children, and daughter-in-law.
More than anything, Norma treasured her family and was deeply present in their lives. She rarely missed an important event, no matter the distance.
Survivors include: her husband, James Newcomer;
children: Mark Seulean (Diane) of The Woodlands, Texas, and Lori Seulean of St. Charles, Missouri;
stepchildren: Victoria Davis (Robert) of Avon, Indiana; Carrie Newcomer-Meitus (Robert) of Bloomington, Indiana; Nancy Eades (Mark) of Plainfield, Indiana; sister: Phyllis Dodd (Stohler); grandchildren: Robert Davis (Jill), Nicholas Davis (Mandy), Amelia Aldred (Ben), Christopher Eades (Amber), Melissa Betustak (Jake), Tyler Seulean, Jared Seulean, Cameron Seulean (MacKenzie), Aubrey Seulean, Kyle Frantz, Bradley Frantz (Becky), and Ryan Frantz (Jordan); Great-grandchildren: Robert Davis, Grace Davis, Aleah Davis, Kamden Frantz, Zoey Betustak, Skylar Betustak, Brayden Eades, and Noah Eades;
step-great-grandchildren: Mariah Dugger and Dominique Eltz.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Kay Lynn Stohler (infant), Geraldine Hendrickson, and Doris McGahey.
Norma's legacy is one of unwavering faith, commitment to education, joyful service, and deep love for her family and community. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered as the elegant, adventurous, and gracious person she was.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Central Christian Church from 9:30 - 11:30 am, followed by the service at 11:30 am with Rev. Rick Vale officiating. Burial will take place in Anderson Memorial Park.
