He was a graduate of the Class of 1950 at Anderson High School. Thereafter, he attended DePauw University and was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. He transferred to Ball State University to complete his formal education, earning a BA in Education ‘54 and MA Education ’62. Following college, he served in the United States Air Force ROTC program taking him to Texas and later Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, from where he was honorably discharged, returning home to Anderson.
He married his high school sweetheart, Lou Ann (Kilmer) Brown, his wife of 68 years, on April 10, 1954 in Anderson. She survives him.
He began his employment with Anderson Community Schools in 1958, first serving as an elementary school teacher and coach. He transitioned to Principal of Hiawatha School and served as a principal of several schools for the last 22 years of a 34-year career. During his career one of his highlights was opening the new Edgewood Elementary School. His last assignment was at College Corner, retiring in 1992.
He was active in his church, First United Methodist Church of Anderson. He served for several years as a church appointed board member of United Faith Housing (Harter House). Foremost dedicated to his family, he was a supporter of many activities with his children. An avid golfer, he learned the game as a boy at Grandview, later becoming a member of Edgewood Country Club and Anderson Country Club.
Phil and Lou Ann raised three children - Steve Brown (Kris) of Carmel, Beth Ann Dowling (Brian) of Clear Lake, TX and Jeff Brown (Kittie) of Noblesville. They had seven grandchildren - Andrew (Brooke), Jennifer (Brown) Fay (Lex), Kevin Brown (Corey); Daniel Dowling and Brianna (Dowling) Reeves (Jonny); and Nathan (Daniela) and Meredith Brown. They were especially proud to have three great grandchildren - Evan Fay, Marlowe Reeves and Teddy Brown. Also, surviving is his brother-in-law, Joseph Kilmer (Beverly), and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis A. Brown and Doris Marie Brown and his brother, David F. Brown.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022, 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Anderson, 1215 Jackson St., Anderson, IN 46016.
Services will follow visitation at 12:00 pm at the church with Rev. Don Denna Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
