On December 6, 2021, Reta Busby got her wings and went home to the loving arms of Jesus. She was 84 years old and a lifelong Indiana resident.
She was born in Brazil, Indiana on April 14, 1937, the youngest of 3 children, to the late Raeburn and Hazel Dickerson. On Christmas Day, December 25, 1960, Reta married her husband of 61 years, Edward Busby.
Reta graduated from Indiana University and was a teacher for several years, before becoming a stay-at-home-mom to her three children, Josanna, Shelly and Scot. When Reta’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Reta was an exceptional wife and mother. She was more than happy to be the central figure in the lives of her children. Anyone who knew them, knew that she was the star in their eyes, and that is all that mattered to her.
Reta is survived by her husband Edward and her three children Josanna, Shelly and Scot (Kathleen) and one grandson, Matthew.
Reta never wanted anything fancy and this poem was saved by her for many years, for this special celebration.
Remember me with laughs and smiles, for that’s how I will remember you all.
If you can only remember me with tears, then don’t remember me at all.
I’ve only gone to rest a little while, so dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be.
My heart will go on.
The family would like to recognize Traditions Hospice, especially Kara Easterday, for the loving care of Reta to ensure her last days were most peaceful.
Per Reta’s wishes, the family will host a private service to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the COPD Foundation.
