While in the Army, he was stationed near Nuremberg, Germany, for two years. During that time, he traveled as much as possible, one of his highlights was the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He vowed once he was married and had a family he would take everyone to see it, and he did.

In 1965, he married Beverly Fischer, together they raised two daughters. In 1980, they took the trip to Europe, visiting the Eiffel Tower and more on a 15-day vacation.

He enjoyed traveling with family and went to Florida almost every Christmas break to Sanibel Island. Dick enjoyed euchre, bowling, and golf.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Anderson, a former Anderson Country Club member, and he volunteered at Community Hospital Anderson.

In later years, he enjoyed taking cruises and purchased a home in Sebring, Florida.
