Listen to Obituary

Former Madison County Commissioner and life long public servant, Sandra Sue Huntzinger, age 84, of Summitville, Indiana passed peacefully on her beloved farm, and surrounded by her loving family on November 15, 2023, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Sandy was born in Anderson, Indiana on December 11, 1938, to the late Vearl and Mable Hexamer. She married Jack Huntzinger, and they shared 61 years of marriage together before he passed away on July 26, 2022.

Sandy graduated in 1956 from St. Mary's Catholic School in Anderson, and worked as a cashier at St. John’s Hospital while in college. In 1962, she began her career in public service at the Madison County Auditor’s Office. Sandy will be remembered as a lady of firsts, as she was the first woman to be elected as Madison County Auditor in 1982, serving 2 and half terms, as well as the first woman to be elected as a Madison County Commissioner, serving three terms. Sandy finally retired in 2004, after 40 years of working tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Madison County.

Sandy truly felt blessed with life's simplest pleasures; crossword puzzles during morning coffee, reading on a quiet afternoon with a cat on her lap, admiring nature during endless walks, stopping and picking wildflowers, and simply enjoying each sunset. She was an animal lover, always providing shelter to so many homeless cats and dogs over the years.

Above all, Sandy was devoted to her faith and family, setting a strong example through her service and generosity to others and her unshakeable belief and hope which was evident by the number of events she attended on behalf of her grandchildren.

Sandy is survived by her loving daughter, Jane (Jeff) Cramer of Upland, IN; granddaughter, Madeline (Daniel Nelson) Cramer; grandson Ethan (Tiffany) Cramer; brother, Tim (Denise) Hexamer of Fortville, IN; sister-in-law, Marilyn Hexamer of Pendleton, IN; and brother-in-law, Harvey Brown of Indianapolis. Along with her parents and husband, Sandy was preceded in death by her two brothers, Patrick and Larry Hexamer, and her sister, Evelyn Brown.

Visitation will be Monday, November 20, 2023, from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson St., Elwood, and Tuesday from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 820 W. Madison St., Alexandria.

Funeral Mass celebrating Sandy's life will be at 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Matthew Jakupco officiating. Burial will follow in Anderson Memorial Park in Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to St. Mary Catholic Church (820 W Madison Street, Alexandria, IN 46001) or The Animal Protection League (613 Dewey St., Anderson, IN 46016).
